Chapter 3: Cause & Effect

Before scanning, users must understand Cause and Effect: “When I activate my switch, something happens.”

This is the foundation of all switch use. Without understanding this connection, scanning makes no sense.

Cause & Effect is often taught with a single big target that always responds. This removes timing pressure and builds trust.

Learning Progression

  1. Random activation
  2. Intentional activation
  3. Timed activation
  4. Controlled activation (scanning)
